McCook County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 5,832. Its county seat is Salem6. The county is named for the former governor of the Dakota Territory and Civil War general Edwin Stanton McCook.


According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,495 km² (577 sq mi). 1,488 km² (575 sq mi) of it is land and 7 km² (3 sq mi) of it (0.46%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,832 people, 2,204 households, and 1,558 families residing in the county. The population density was 4/km² (10/sq mi). There were 2,383 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (4/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 98.87% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.15% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,204 households out of which 34.10% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.10% were married couples living together, 5.10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% were non-families. 26.80% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.15.

In the county, the population was spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 19.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 99.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.20 males.
