Mordecai Wheeler was born around 1787 in Baltimore County, Maryland. Mordecai is believed to be the son of Mordecai Wheeler (c1765-?) and Melinda Price (c1766-?), although no direct evidence has been discovered which confirms the connection between Mordecai and his suspected parents at this point.

On November 27, 1813, Mordecai married Keziah Murray Gill in Baltimore County, Maryland.
