Nathan James Stock was born in 1877 in Leigh On Sea, Essex, England. He grew up there with his parents and many siblings before moving to nearby Ashingdon. He married Mary Blanche Hughes in 1903. He was a farmer and bricklayer. In early 1910, Nathan got a job offer to work for a while in Canada and went to Liverpool in April where he boarded the SS Southwark. In late April 1910, Nathan landed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. He went onwards to Toronto. It is as yet unknown when he returned to England but it was by April 1911 when he was living in Ashingdon, Essex.
