Obituaries
The oldest resident ot the Hastings River passed away on Sunday last at his residence, Pappinbarra Creek, in the person of Mr. Newman Hollis, senr., at the remarkable age of 100 years. The deceased was born in England, and arrived in the State about 70 years ago. He was married in the old country, and brought his wife and three children out here with him. He came to this district soon after landing, and engaged in the strenuous work which fell to the lot of the early colonists. Much of his life was engaged in the carrying trade, per medium of the bullock dray, which was the chief means of transport in the pre-railway days. Mr. Hollis' wife died many years ago. His eldest surviving son is Mr. 'Bob' Hollis, aged 75 years, of Tacking Point. We hope, to publish fuller details of the old gentleman's career in our next issue.
Mr Newman Hollis, who was probably the oldest individual in the commonwealth died at Pappinbarra, near Port Macquarie on Saturday last. Deceased was 107 years old, and had been in the Colony since infancy. He was a native of Buckinghamshire, England. Up to within six months ago he used to ride about the bush looking after his cows and at times would talk of incidents in the early days of his life. He had been a widower for a great many years. He left a large number of descendants.
