Nicholas Maher was born 1865 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia to Thomas Appledore Maher (1841-1893) and Hannah Eady Matthews (1835-1911) . He married Alice Mitchell Hanshaw (1870-1949) 8 December 1886 in Grenfell, New South Wales, Australia.
Nicholas Maher married Alice Hanshaw on 8th Dec 1886. They had five children: Hazel Burtin in 1888, Arthur Ernest in 1890, William Nicholas in 1892, Thomas Samuel in 1895 and Ruby May in 1897. Nicholas was involved in bankruptcy, and committing false pretences. He was a butcher working in Grenfell and Young regions of NSW
Nicholas absconded to WA with Ellen Wheatley. They had 2 children: John Clive in 1904 and Vera May in 1906 in Kalgoorlie. By this time he was known as David Nicholas Maher, working as a slaughterman in Kalgoorlie. He was invovled in a defamation case against his employees for selling diseased meat to the public. He was again bankrupt in 1909 and tried to abscond to London. He was apprehended in Colombo and returned to WA to serve 5 months hard labour in prison. He was now known also as Dennis Maher and Dennis Morton. In 1913 David Nocholas Maher is a slaughterman working in Chernside QLD. Nothing further is known about him after this time.
