- 1941 - World War II: Soviet leader Joseph Stalin addresses the Soviet Union for only the second time during his three-decade rule. - 1942 - World War II: SS City of Cairo is sunk by German U-Boat U-68 in the South Atlantic en route to Brazil from Cape Town.
