Biography

Rachel (Ewe.) The younger of the daughters of Laban, the dearly loved wife of Jacob, and mother of Joseph and Benjamin (Gen. 29–31; 33:1–2, 7; 35:16, 24–25; 46:19, 22, 25); her grave (35:19–20; 48:7; 1 Sam. 10:2). Jeremiah, in a very beautiful passage, pictures Rachel as weeping in Ramah for her children, the descendants of Benjamin, Ramah being the place at which the exiles were assembled before their departure for Babylon (Jer. 31:15). Matthew quotes the passage in his description of the mourning at Bethlehem (where Rachel’s grave was) after the murder of the children (Matt. 2:18).

Laban's Family

Laban welcomed his nephew, Jacob as a young man, and set him the stipulation of seven years' labour before he permitted him to marry his daughter Rachel. Laban tricked Jacob into marrying his elder daughter Leah instead. Jacob then took both women as wives. The dealings between the two branches are described in Gen. 24; 27:43–31:55. Jacob lived with him and served him for 20 years.

Laban and his family were described as dwelling in Paddan Aram, in Mesopotamia. Though the biblical text itself does not attest to this, Rabbinic sources also identify him as the father of Bilhah and Zilpah. Bilhah and Zilpah were maids of Leah and Rachel and also concubines with whom Jacob had children (Midrash Raba, Gen 24).

Remains

Jacob's other wife, Rachel, was buried "in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem." (Genesis 35:19–20)

19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem.
20 And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.
Genesis 35:19-20 - KJV
