Richard Holyoake was born 2 June 1808 in Weymouth, Greater London, England, United Kingdom and died 30 August 1893 in Takaka, Tasman Region, New Zealand of unspecified causes. He married Eliza Kimble (c1825-1912) 11 March 1841 in Camberwell, England, United Kingdom.

Richard came to New Zealand first as a whaler. He returned to England before migrating in 1842 with his second wife and their baby son. They went to Riwaka, just north of Motueka. A distinguished descendant was Keith Holyoake, the first person to be both Prime Minister and Governor-General of New Zealand.
