Robert Greene of Gillingham was born circa 1480 to John Greene (c1450-) .

Robert was a son of "John Greene the Fugitive". He bought an estate called Bowridge Hill or Porridge Hill at Gillingham in Dorset and was described in a 1543 subsidy roll as "an elderly man with grandchildren". Two of his descendants became prominent citizens of Rhode Island: Surgeon John Greene (grandson of son and heir Richard) and John Greene of Quidnessett (grandson of son John); each has numerous recorded descendants, some through intermarriage between branches of the family.

Footnotes (including sources)

‡ General
Ω Birth
  • Date estimated by interpolation and by assessment of the statement that he was elderly with grandchildren in 1543
¢ Children
  • Peter died without heirs, leaving the inheritance of Bowridge Hill (or Hall) to Richard. Descendants of Richard and of John, both named John, were later prominent citizens in Rhode Island. Apart from those Johns and their descendants, Robert left no known descendants in America.
  • All birth years are informed guesses. Robert's children are listed with all boys before all girls, as was the past custom; the girls have been interspersed as a likely average.
