Scott County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 5,537. Its county seat is Winchester6.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 655 km² (253 sq mi). 650 km² (251 sq mi) of it is land and 5 km² (2 sq mi) of it (0.73%) is water.

Scott County was formed in 1839 out of Morgan County. It was named for a local pioneer family named Scott.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,537 people, 2,222 households, and 1,562 families residing in the county. The population density was 9/km² (22/sq mi). There were 2,464 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 99.46% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.13% Asian American, 0.04% from other races, and 0.20% from two or more races. 0.18% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,222 households out of which 33.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.30% were married couples living together, 8.30% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% were non-families. 26.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.80% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the county the population was spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 16.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 93.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $36,566, and the median income for a family was $42,924. Males had a median income of $30,099 versus $21,385 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,998. About 6.50% of families and 9.70% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.10% of those under age 18 and 6.30% of those age 65 or over.
