Somervell County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. In 2000, its population was 6,809. Its county seat is Glen Rose6. The county is named for Alexander Somervell, Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas. The county contains the Comanche Peak Nuclear Generating Station, one of two nuclear power plants in Texas.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 497 km² (192 sq mi). 485 km² (187 sq mi) of it is land and 12 km² (5 sq mi) of it (2.46%) is water. It is the third-smallest county in Texas.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 6,809 people, 2,438 households, and 1,840 families residing in the county. The population density was 14/km² (36/sq mi). There were 2,750 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (15/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 92.19% White, 0.28% Black or African American, 0.69% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 5.11% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. 13.44% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,438 households out of which 37.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.70% were married couples living together, 9.60% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.50% were non-families. 21.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.73 and the average family size was 3.17.

In the county, the population was spread out with 28.40% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 99.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $39,404, and the median income for a family was $46,458. Males had a median income of $32,463 versus $23,381 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,367. About 6.10% of families and 8.60% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.30% of those under age 18 and 9.10% of those age 65 or over.
