Wikia replied saying they had to turn off a key part of our person-page software for 3 hours but have now restored it, with a patch (not giving any detail). Some of the parts of pages have not recovered. See Forum:SMW on Familypedia for details of what was wrong. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 04:05, November 14, 2010 (UTC)
Some of our templates have since been modified, losing some non-English interface labels etc (which is a pity if we want to continue to cater for other languages) but restoring most of what used to be displayed, including the automatically-generated mini-biography that heads each standard person-article.
In January 2011 Wikia gave us a new version of Semantic Forms, which may be good in the long run but does not fix any of the problems and may have introduced others. The mini-biography wouldn't display anything that uses a "short name".
If you are at all familiar with Semantic MediaWiki, you would be most welcome to suggest ways we could fix things!

Some good news.

New contributors appear every week. We "old hands" hope they feel welcome (and we hope that they read their "welcome" messages with as much care as we put into the composition!) Our aim is for every user to enjoy reading and contributing as much as we do.

Any problems - check the help desk. Keep up with the play at the Watercooler or just by reading the RecentChanges.

If you can use the Firefox browser, version 3 (which is respectable and free), please try the standard input forms, where a couple of movements will often enter a whole country name or state name, and a new parent page usually has three names already in the right boxes and may display children automatically, saving lots of time. For inspiration, see Charlemagne/tree. (Until further notice, DO NOT "EDIT WITH FORM" UNLESS USING FIREFOX 3. Instead use the "work-around" at Forum:Data entry without using Form:Person.)
