[edit] Format error at top
Some failure to translate a WP template properly is probably the cause of the problem near the top. Robin Patterson 12:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
Fixed (blank lines at the end of templates). Thurstan 20:28, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
[edit] Too many "Template:wp"
"Warning: This page contains too many expensive parser function calls.
"It should have less than 500, there are now 1168. "
Manually converting them to links takes 5 to 10 seconds each. Tedious.
[edit] Dates
Many of them are dates, which we should convert to simple internal links. Can we clean them with a bot? (See below before rushing off to do it, unless it's really easy) Robin Patterson
[edit] People
A large number of the others are people, all of whom we want pages for, so we could convert them too. But:
- a bot could not distinguish between them and other links such as "football", which we don't want pages for (and for some we might not particularly want links for)
- all or most of them are not in our standard (YOB-YOD) format (which lends weight to my often-repeated suggestion that we should use WP page names exactly)
Any ideas? Robin Patterson 12:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
[edit] How clever can a bot be?
Is it possible that a bot could go through our whole database examining every instance of Template:wp and converting back to an ordinary link wherever the target does exist on this wiki? If it can, let's see how much reduction in the problem that produces, and repeat every few months. Robin Patterson 12:22, 4 November 2008 (UTC)
No offers? No ideas? The main thing stopping me from trying to improve on the current bots is Windows Millennium Edition, no longer supported and apparently incapable of handling pywikipedia. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 05:42, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
I know nothing about bots, so I was trying to do it "semi-automatically", using "subst:#ifexists" to do the test at edit time. However, this construct seems to be broken when there are optional parameters. I am still thinking about it. Thurstan 06:32, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
