Template talk:Also on Wikipedia

[edit] Uses

That template (is clever and) could save some quite a bit of time for me and others, by replacing the typing of (at least the link line of):

==External links==
*[[wikipedia:pagename whatever|Wikipedia's equivalent page]]

Presumably the WP page name has to be identical. What happens if WP changes the page name? The "External links" version will reach the target with a redirect; does the template do that too?

Any other uses?

There are versions of it for "Also on Wikia", and we could probably come up with versions for external genealogy wiki systems as well.

[edit] Placement

And where should we put it? Top, bottom, or first thing after any "External links" heading?

Pretty much anywhere, depending on the context. For US Presidents, I'll probably be putting it at the top. To connect to other wikia, I'd put it in the section that deals with that connection. To connect with other genealogy wiki, the external links section seems right.

[edit] Caution

It doesn't include namespace prefixes. So it can be used only on an article page. I tested it on my User page and was told this:

Wikipedia has an article on:
Robin Patterson
The form of the template call gives you the option to control the namespace. {{alsoWP|User:Chadlupkes|Chad Lupkes}} will send you to my user page on Wikipedia, but will only show my name. Chadlupkes 13:13, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Gotcha. For absolute simplicity (ie not needing anything added), with the use of FULLPAGENAME so that it doesn't chop anything off, see Template:alsoWP as now amended. Robin Patterson 14:31, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Shortening

If I start using it, I will probably use the shorter version that I have just created: Template:alsoWP.

[edit] General Comments

Oh this is very nice. Thanks! Zephyrinus 22:34, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Would this drive people crazy: image:97px-AnimWIKIPEDIA4.gif? Would it not be more consistent with the multicolours of the Celtic Knot? Zephyrinus 22:43, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
LOL!! Probably would drive people crazy. So what!! That's awesome! Chadlupkes 23:00, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Beautiful. (Why French?) Robin Patterson 12:53, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
When it's reduced to near-icon size it can't be read. But, French was the only one I saw. Oh, I didn't make it - is that what you thought. Oh, no, no, no. I got this from Commons, like everything else. I still have to get up-to-speed on Gimp.
I have to admit, though, having something colourful encourages me to include links to WP. I hope it makes this Wikia more attractive too - more unique (if unique could be more) than WP - more surprising, more friendly and so on. Zephyrinus 20:53, 6 April 2007 (UTC)
