Early life

Darby was born in Châteauroux, Indre, France. He is the eldest of four children of Margery Ann Olivera and Thomas Junior Darby, who was assigned to Chateauroux-Deols Air Base at the time. The family moved to Mather Air Force Base, Sacramento, California in 1962 and two years later to Klamath, California. Darby attended Margaret Keating School, graduating from Del Norte County High School, Crescent City, California in 1978. He was raised as a Roman Catholic. At the age of 16, Darby began as a guest announcer on KPOD in Crescent City.

Adulthood

Following his high school graduation, Darby enlisted in the United States Air Force and was assigned to Lackland Air Force Base for basic training with the 3723rd Training Squadron, followed by attending technical schooling at Brooks Air Force Base in the field of Environmental Health Services, with his permanent duty station being Francis E. Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne, Wyoming.

After leaving the military, Darby moved to Reno, Nevada, to resume his career in radio.

In 1987, Darby married Mary Elizabeth Conklin, of Ramona, California. His son, Kyle, was born in 1992.

Darby earned his Bachelor of Arts in Christian Studies from Global University of Springfield, Missouri in June 1999. By March 2001, he earned a Master of Business Administration in Christian Organization Management with a major in Communication and in November 2003, Darby earned his Doctor of Theology with a major in History also from Global University.

He published his first book "Growing Up Klamath," a collection of stories from his childhood, in September 2010. In June 2012, Darby published a second book titled, “Final Flight,” the recounting of the search for missing adventurer Steve Fossett.
