Uriah Berry was born circa 1817 in Salem, Livingston County, Kentucky, United States to John Berry (1792-1839) and Maria Hodge (1797-1870) and died December 1869 in Carrsville, Livingston County, Kentucky, United States of disease of the heart. He married Amanda Jane Richmond (c1822-1877) 12 December 1839 in Golconda, Pope County, Illinois, United States. Ancestors are from the United States.

Uriah Berry was a prosperous merchant in Livingston County, Kentucky. He probably met his wife Amanda either on the ferry across the Ohio River or in its terminus of Golconda, Illinois, where she lived. Uriah's father John supposedly operated this ferry. Online records indicate that he served as postmaster for Berry's Ferry in 1851 and was honored with a payment of $30 from the state treasury for arresting counterfeiters that same year.

Curiously, a book about love stories on the Underground Railroad features one Isaac Berry, a slave (and supposed illegitimate son of Uriah) presumed to be the 21-year-old black male owned by Uriah in 1850. About 1859, this slave escaped from Palmyra, Missouri, where he was then owned by Uriah's daughter Juliann and her husband Jim Pratt, to marry a former white neighbor, Lucy Millard, who had been kind to him and fallen in love. The book also claims that Uriah's middle name is George. Note that Juliann would only have been 16 at that time, so she was probably only recently married and Isaac was probably part of her marriage dowry.

Uriah died from "disease of the heart" in December 1869.
