AncestorsEdit

The following tree shows the first few generations of my ancestors, and also demonstrates my ethnic composition. The numbers 1 through 7 marked next to the ancestors below divide my ancestry into 7 distinct groups, which are explained below the tree. For convenience, these groups are referred to by their assigned numbers throughout this page.

Ancestor TreeEdit

Ancestor GroupsEdit

  1. John Borland is best described, ethnically, as a descendant of a sprawling tree of Ohio pioneers and early Ohio settlers. John's ancestors are generally of Germanic descent (including Scottish, German, Dutch, English, Norweigan and Swiss nationalities), although a few apear to be of Celtic (Welsh and Irish) and Italic (French) descent.
  2. Maximilian Freudenberg was born to a Jewish family in Berlin, Germany. He arrived in New York 1865 with his father Siegmund.
  3. Charles Lindauer was the son of an immigrant family from near Strasbourg, Alsace-Lorraine. His parents came to America on their honeymoon.
  4. Anna Kershaw is the descendant of early Dutch immigrants to the New York City area. Her family traces back to the Dutch who came to New York when it was New Amsterdam.
  5. Johan Winblad is primarily of Swedish descent, although his distant ancestry includes connections to wealthy families in Scandinavia with roots outside of the region. Most of the work in tracing this side of my family has been done by my cousin, Richard Arthur Norton. Richard is my paternal grandmother's sister's son.
  6. Ole Pedersen is a descendant of numerous families throughout Vest-Agder, Norway.
  7. Thea of Vetteland is a descendant of numerous families throughout Rogaland, Norway.
  8. Joseph Szczesny is of Slavic descent. His ancestors are of Polish and Lemko ethnicities.
  9. Margaret Rice descends from a coal-mining family in Pennsylvania. All of her ancestors came to America from Lithuania, although some of them are not Lithuanian by ethnicity. Her pedigree includes individuals of Lithuanian, Slavic and Jewish ancestry. Most of the work in tracing this side of my family has been done by my cousin, William Mitchell.

Tracing my Ancestors Back to EuropeEdit

Of the seven groups listed above, all but two are traced completely back to Europe. Group #1 still has many loose ends that need considerable research and collaboration. However, Group #4 probably only needs to be traced back one generation further to connect to existing New Amsterdam Dutch genealogies which trace nearly all of the New Amsterdam Dutch settlers' families back to Holland.

Group #1 Ohio ResearchEdit

By now, I have traced nearly all of the ancestral lines of John Earl Borland back prior to their migration to Ohio. A tree demonstrating John Borland's Ohio ancestors can be viewed by clicking here. There are, however, a few pieces of important data missing, and one loose branch. The missing information to complete the tree is as follows:

  • The parents of John's ancestor Harrison Miller are presently unknown (although suspects have been identified). As Harrison Miller was born in Harrison County, Ohio, his birth is the most important missing link in John's Ohio genealogy, since Harrison's parents, and probably his grandparents, settled in Ohio.
  • The maiden name of John's ancestor Catharine, the wife of Ninean Walker, is presently unknown.
  • The given name of ? Welch, father of John's ancestor Hannah Welch, is presently unknown.
  • The maiden name of Margaret, mother of John's ancestor Hannah Welch, is presently unknown.

John Borland has a single ancestor, Mary ?, who resided in the District of Columbia in the early 1800s, whose ancestry has not yet been traced back to Europe.

  • The maiden name of Anna Kershaw's maternal grandmother Ann is unknown. The 1850 census states she was born in New York. In 1810, she must have lived in Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, where her husband William Oldrin is found in the census.

Tracing my Family Lines Through EuropeEdit

The amount of information on my family lines in Europe varies greatly. DNA evidence suggests that most, if not all, of my ancestors have resided in Europe since the ice ages, long before the advent of written recording of genealogical information. Therefore, the goal is to find living male descendants who have direct paternal ancestry leading to my earliest-known male ancestors in Europe, and living descendants who have direct maternal ancestry leading to my earliest-known femal ancestors in Europe, for DNA testing. DNA testing, to the extent donors are available, will likely be the key to tracing branches of my family tree deeper into Europe, where direct written genealogical evidence is not available. Research in GermanyEdit

Berlin (Group #2)Edit

Maximilian Freudenberg was born October 25, 1857 in Berlin, Germany, to parents Sigmund Freudenberg (c1835-?) and Clara Horwitz (c1835-?). Maximilian progenated the Freudenberg family of Jersey City, New Jersey. No link has yet been established bewteen Sigmund Freudenberg and the other Freudenberg families of Berlin, Germany. However, research on the Horwitz families of Berlin has revealed a potential match of Clara Horwitz with Clara Charlotte Horwitz (1834-?), although further research is required to substantiate the proposition that the two Claras are the same person.
