User:Phlox/aphorism: SMW-what is in a name?

From Familypedia

Semantic MediaWiki related extensions represents a structured wikiImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif approach that has a trajectory towards a goal of representing knowledge in a manner that computers can help more in helping people learn more. It is the beginning of an evolutionary path from dumb structured wikis to smart semantic wikis. As of the time of this writing, the stable features put us at the beginning of the spectrum. SMW is long on the structured part and short on the semantic part.[1] Not that there is any reason to complain. The extensions are going to revolutionize wikis. Technical note is being taken of the marketing aspects of the push towards SMW/RDF/(insert your acronym here)- the hyperbole is acceptable.

  1. ^ Clearly, powerful things can be done. A good example is search support for sub properties (search on property person, pick up items encoded as father). Some features aren't there yet and they are the ones more towards the semantic end of the spectrum: Inverse properties (Parent-child), Domain and range restrictions (eg Father ((has domain::Man| )); Father ((has range::Person| )); N-ary relationsImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif (good for aggregate objects). Not really all that semantic- but they represent the more advanced features of databases like what StonebrakerImage:Wp_globe_tiny.gif was doing with Postgres triggers eons ago as a response to the OODBMS systems built on non relational back ends.
