You're a fast mover, Richard Arthur. You weren't here when I looked earlier today. I've just welcomed you to the Central Wikia (and said we want you here), so I won't give you a full-sized "template" welcome here!

Not many persistent active contributors here. It's not everybody's ideal genealogy site, but I'm sure it has a place. I've got only a dozen relatives listed, because it takes a bit of time and I have them all perfectly displayed at WorldConnect whenever I want them.

Watercooler discussions have touched on the desirability of optional automating of page creation. Still a fairly open topic. Most recent energetic contribution is from the Wigton Walkers led by Bill Willis.

I look forward to your contributions of facts and ideas.

Page names where a person is "of a place"Edit

I see your recent Scandinavians include a few of the above. Seems unnatural to put the dates in the middle. See my John Pollok of Balgray (c 1690-after 1720) for how it can be done in what I think is a more natural way. Robin Patterson 13:14, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

CategoriesEdit

Richard, the format for catgories is [[Category:Category title]]. See my edits of your Hans Pederson page for an example. The wikipedia style is to place these at the bottom of the page, but it's usually easier to place them at the top. The Category entries will still display at the bottom of the page (or elsewhere depending on preference settings). If you add a category that has no other entries, your new category will initially appear in red---indicating an empty page. Click the red link, and you'll go to the newly created category page. You'll need to type something into the edit field to actually create the page. I usually just describe the content a bit, and let the machinery do the rest Bill 17:14, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Butting in (which is perfectly OK on a wiki user's talk page!) - one does not need to describe the content every time, but one should ensure that the new category has a parent category (or two +) of its own. Robin Patterson 12:31, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi Richard!

All the work you are doing inputing your family relations is certainly appreciated! Pretty much day in and day out you're adding members of your family line. And I have to admit that I find what you've written about many of them of interest. Not that there's a relationship between them and my family, but because I find the mini biographies interesting reading. You do get a real sense of who some of these folks were---especially, the more recent people.

And you ar right, I was looking at a relatively recent person, and I guess I didn't see any children because they were all still living. Bill 13:39, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Andrew, you can create a new account under any name you wish, anytime you wish. I suspect that its usually better to have only a single user name, but its not necessary. However, in answer to your specific question, I don't know, as its never come up before. robin may know. However, even if its possible, you haven't given us enough information to do as you ask. Spcifically, you didn't sign your name (4 "tilde's") so we don't know what user account your are working from. Bill 01:18, 30 April 2007 (UTC)
Hi, guys! Richard did email me about this but it was only today that I saw it. Bill's right about re-registering under a new username. (I can't find any actual policy about deleting accounts, but I have a feeling Wikia likes to leave them alone, not deleted; see w:Talk:Wikia#Terminating_Accounts.) Starting up under a new name is unusual but quite acceptable in unusual circumstances (which seems to apply here, for reasons I don't need to know). The three current administrators on the w:c:Psychology Wikia did that, once they decided that they wanted to have their real names used instead of nicknames, for the sake of professional appearance. The old user pages are still there, with notes saying where the users have "gone". Andrew may not wish to have such an obvious link made: I see no problem with that. You should be good to go. Maria Elisabeth has her commas now. Great article by the way.... It is a very odd situation with the commas- the WP template didn't have them either, and how the comma gets inserted is a complete mystery to me. I don't see any on WP that does it. FirefoxEdit

  • Not a problem at all. I prefer it because it has less display bugs, but use both to check for any display differences.
  • Some of the articles you have been generating recently have photos directly after the person template. What it looks like in IE is that you don't see any text next to the Person information until after the photos. Firefox has no problem displaying it correctly, but IE messes up. There may be a patch to fix the site so that IE won't get so confused. You may see one of the articles that had your new template I changed so that the photos were way further in the text. The IE bug is why I did it.
  • Anyhow- don't do anything to your articles for now. A lot of people will do what you are doing, because it is perfectly reasonable wikitext. Hopefully I can fix it is no bother for everyone, but who knows- I'll leave a note on Forum if articles have to be fixed. And no- a bot can't do it very well because it's too dumb to 1) figure out there is a problem, and 2) make the judgement call on how far down the images should be moved to.

My bad. I neglected to add a MediaWiki:fm-findagrave entry page, and so the int:fm-findagrave had nothing to display. It appears to do what it was intended to do now, is that correct? If not let me know asap as I shall be away for two weeks starting 12/20. In all cases, feel free to just revert something I did to the previous working version. My name is Diane (Farrell) Korpics {1960}. I am the Daughter of Louise (Outwater) Farrell {1921-2007} and Joseph J. Farrell {1918- 1991}, and Granddaughter of Valentine Outwater {1888-1960} and Mary (Smith) Outwater {1890-1965}.

I Married Frank Korpics {1962} in Colonia, NJ on 9/27/1992 - we have Twins, Matthew and Lauren {2001}. Currently, we reside in Hamilton, NJ.

I have spoken to you on the telephone a few times and even sent a Christmas Card to you last year. I just got the internet last year and am learning how to use it. I just started learning about this site late last year. I haven't figured it all out yet. I didn't even know you sent an E-Mail to me until tonight. I do apologise. Do they have a spell check? Apologize/apologise/apalogize, whatever. What do they mean by sign your posts using four tildes? Maybe just start it with those wavy lines? I'll have to try this out to see if I am doing this right. It has been interesting reading all the family genealogy so far. There are errors out there, such as Great Grandpa Thorvald Tandberg. He never referred to himself as Thorvald Martin Tandberg I, just Thorvald Martin Tandberg. I have been trying to figure out how to fix that. His son, Thorvald Martin Tandberg, Jr. only lived for one day. There was something wrong. He didn't even write down the date, just that it was in 1900. Thoralf was born on August 31st the following year, that's 8 months into the year. So it could've been anytime in 1900, with the exception of December. Besides, when a person is born, they are never born with a I or a Senior after their name. So, I just don't use it. It's a given if you see a son with a Jr. after his name. And you can't be a II if you are the son. II is used when you have an exact name of a grandfather or an uncle. An example is Joseph Kennedy, II; he was name after his uncle who died during the WWII. However, you can pass away with a Senior after your name. Anyways, you have spoken to me. I am very careful of the information I give out on my genealogy. I want to be certain that I have the facts right. I want to get a hold of my cousin June and ask how Uncle Ralph spelled his name once he got to United States. In Norway the spelling was Thoralf and I have always used that. Now I don't know. People change the spelling of their names when they emigrate. So now I am going to have to check it out. I do know that he was very pleased with his name. He kept all four of them. Well, now to see if this works.

He did not change the spelling of his name once he emigrated to the United States of America. That is good to know. And I do have some photographs.

See Template:d-us. So when you see that one of your people is in a category like that but it's a red link, you can very quickly fix it and thereby make the link much more useful. Info pages Edit

Richard, you seem never to have created an info page. Not in the last 5 months anyway. They do have advantages in time-saving, over the medium term. One in every two or three new contributors seems to be taking up the idea with little or no prompting, so I think we must have got the instructions OK now. You may shortly see how I easily enhanced your latest obituary posting. You will be able to edit the info page to give some of those people names that link to their own pages.

As an experiment I chose a person page at random to add an info page to. The page I found was Cyril J. Deutsch (1903-1986). Let me know what you think of the result. I also corrected the death year in the Death section. In the Second Marriage section it is written "In 1994 he was living at 5696 Country Lakes Drive in Sarasota, Florida." I was interested in doing facebook pages like what you did with David Wahlberg but unfortunately, I noticed they nuked an account that was of a deceased person (Owen Barfield). It was particularly annoying to the people who had been making posts discussing his work. Anyway, the David Wahlberg page sooner or later suffer the same fate. Thanks for the tip. Regarding Knol, it has some interesting characteristics. The idea of controlling the degree of collaboration is attractive for this domain. Collective safeguards against subtle vandalism works on WP because no matter how obscure the information, because WP restricts itself to content on "notable" subjects, there is usually enough people around to clean up messes made by visitors with odd takes on reality. Not so true with family histories where POV disputes over events that happened two generations ago are still being fought with hot passions. Semi protected collaboration is a nice way of handling that in a decentralized way. OTOH I loath the idea of establishment of any sort of priesthood of the truth, or of balkanization of information. If someone honestly believes he can prove that Wahlberger was a opium smoking, mahjong playing wife beater, then you can keep him out, but nothing will stop him from doing his version of the David Wahlberg article. Then you get the Gedcom problem where there are 25 copies on the same person, all in many respects duplicates of each other.
Sorry for the ramble, but scaling questions give me a lot of concern. Automated import of WP's biographies was something I was doing two years ago but at the time there weren't any good forms to pour such vast amounts of concrete into. Due to the recent improvements and the multilingual support, we will be able to suck in articles from all WP languages, and that will get us into hundreds of thousands of articles real fast. When this backbone of high quality interlinked articles is in place, it can be augmented with high quality gedcoms. At that point we would be cracking a million pretty fast.
Some people might think this sounds glorious, but the adminstration issues scare the crap out of me. You have been around WP long enough to have seen the weird disputes that people get hot about. So what admin in their right mind is going to want to insert themselves into some obscure family dispute that the contributors dogmatically refuse to find common ground on? Maybe Knol's approach of dispersing authority for dispute resolution is a good fit for this problem set. ~ Phlox 04:00, September 22, 2009 (UTC)
I always let people have their say and quote them directly, that way I am never blamed for what has been recorded. For the facts, I rely on documents, for the personality, I love the conflicting testimonies people give. My rule is to have each family biography in five places online, so that the chance it will survive the next 50 years is increased. I have been readding all of my Google Pages biographies into Google Sites. I even added to Google groups, and to Google Base.
Certainly, redundancy is goodness. Due to the infinitesimally small cost of bits and their nearly effortless replication, it's hard not to come up with the likelihood that for the first time in our history we are looking at the immortality of life narratives. Well, remember, when Yahoo bought Flickr they deleted all the images that were stored at Google Photos, they also deleted all the original yahoo profiles when they switched to Yahoo 360. Google keeps everything, a terabyte of storage is now $100, and those pennies they receive per search add up quickly.

I came across the interesting story of Marcus Pembrey's use of genealogical information[1] to create a hypothesis for the workings of epigenetics. Medicine is your bailiwick not mine so I was wondering if you might suggest a reference where I could extract a list of environmental factors that might be interesting to record about an individual. (Exposure to toxins, famine, other significant stresses on the body). New Features/ Pain Points Edit

Thank you for notifying me about this site. I will take advantage of your kind offer to answer some of my basic questions.

1. I am surprised that I missed the site until now, especially as it has been active for at least 4 years. Do the names of this site show up in on-line searches using Google or other search engines? If not, outsiders who might be interested in some persons or genealogies might never find them.

2. When loading pages from Wikipedia, the colors of the links (red or blue) seem to remain as they were in Wikipedia, even if the linked articles are not in Familypedia. Should the articles on related subjects (such as the schools attended, the professions etc.) should also be loaded into Familypedia so that they can be accessed the way they are in Wikipedia.

3. Are articles containing full family trees also acceptable in Familypedia, so that the genealogy can be easier to read than by going up and down the parents-child relationships or are such familty trees reserved for genealogy sites such as Ancestry, My Heritage or others.

Have you ever run across an Asa Jucket in you Jacquet/Jucket line? I believe he is a grandson of Pierre but I'm having trouble with the connection. He is Listed in the MA militia raised in and around New Salem as "Jinket" and some of his children were born in Johnson VT. c.1820. Any hints would be greatly appreciated!

I know this a long-shot, but I found your name when I found the name of the woman whom I think may be my maternal great-grandmother, Mildred Lynette Van Deusen. It listed you as a contributor of the single photograph of her on the page, and though this is a gigantic leap of faith, I need to know if there is any way you could help me in my search. Did you know Ms. Van Deusen or have a relative who did? If not, do you know who added the information surrounding her to this site, or where I could find more? I'm desperate, my grandfather was a foster child who sealed his records at age 18, and there are many signs that she could have been his mother. (I looked on ancestry.com and found a Mildred matching the description I knew from my grandmother - that she was a nurse working in Boston around when my grandfather Winston was born in 1930 illegitimately) I know no such child is listed here, but obviously if there is an illegitimate child it wouldn't be listed officially. I know this is such a stupid idea of me to go out on a whim like this, but since his records are sealed and he was so embittered as an adult, my resources are so few and finding your name on that page and contacting you is all that I can do. Copying from Wikipedia Edit

Some of the answer to your query is at Help:Copying from Wikipedia. Copy the whole page from its edit box pasting in here with the addition of an acknowledgment template. Then trim off anything we definitely don't want here, which is often nothing; if in doubt, leave it there for someone else to evaluate.

We tend to use {{usedwp}}, which has a similar effect to {{Wikipedia}} but is easier to type. Whichever one you use, it's all you need if the page has exactly the same name, which it should have if it's a place but should not have if it's a biography.

For biographies, our half-agreed practice is to have a FP page with exactly the Wikipedia name (Useful for checking and searching; and ideally a "hndis" page if the name's not unique), redirecting to the "name plus dates" FP biography page. On the FP biography page, the acknowledgment template needs to have the WP page name added as a parameter, e.g. {{usedwp|Richard Norton}}.

I love your user page (and your other pages, mind) and find the organisation of people very interesting. I like the occupation and life(/death)-related sequences. how do you categories pages by what lagnuage the surname is. and i noticed this site lacking spanish, asian, middle eastern, and other non-european surnames. would this site like those surnames contributed.

Birth and death location Edit

As you probably know, Familypedia includes the template bdm (birth, death, marriage) which attached to any location automatically created a list of people who were born, died, married or interred in that location. For instance, if you go to the article Chicago, you can access the page Chicago/bmd by a simple click and get a list of all the people in Wikifamily who are listed as born etc in Chicago.

However the system works only if the link in the person article is properly defined. Link to Wikipedia practically eliminate the inclusion of those persons in the list. Of course, if you want a person not to show up in the list you can make any link you want. But if you would like a person to be included in the Familypedia bdm lists, you might want to consider linking the information to the appropriate articles in Familypedia and not to Wikipedia.

With your permission I could make the corrected links, if you so desire.

Wikipedia vs Familypedia for geographyEdit

I prefer to link to an article in Wikipedia. The Familypedia geography articles are out of date the moment they are cut and pasted here. We have categories for the city someone is born in. It seems like a waste of time to copy every geography article just for the sake of having it here. No one will update them with any regularity and they are a sea of red links.
