Walter was the 5th of 11 children of John Hawthorne Taylor (1853-1940) and Mary Matilda McLean (1859-1930). His paternal grandparents were John Taylor (1809-1871) [1] and Nancy Bright (1816-1896). His great-grandparents included John Taylor (c1772-c1865) and Margaret Hawthorne (?-1824).
