He married Marion Templeton (c1818-c1880) 13 May 1837 in Roseneath Cottage, Parramatta, Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia. He married Elizabeth Mary Nolan (1845-1919) May 1889 in Eschol Park, New South Wales, Australia.

William and his mother, Eliza Forlonge, were pioneers of Australia's merino industry, importing sheep from Saxony first to Tasmania at Kenilworth near Campbell Town in 1829, then at Euroa, Seven Creeks, Victoria. William's father John had been, according to relative Nancy Adams in her book Family Fresco, "the linch-pin of the enterprise" until his death.
William had an eventful life in Australia, being bankrupted twice and a member of a State Parliament three times.
1867 bankruptcy
His failure was reported in British newspapers, such as Liverpool Daily Post on 12 and 13 September and Staffordshire Sentinel and Commercial & General Advertiser on 14 September. "Advices from Australia announces the failure of Mr William Forlonge, a sqatter in Victoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. His liabilities were estimated to reach the large sum of £283,000, including, it is stated, £66,000 to the bank of Australia."[1]

Eliza Christina's wedding was reported thus by the Morning Post of 9 August 1861[5]:
- POOLE--FORLONGE.--On the 6th instant, at St. James's, Paddington, by the Rev. Charles Ward, Rector of Maulden, Reginald Stuart Poole, Esq., of the British Museum, to Eliza Christina, eldest daughter of William Forlonge, Esq., of Melbourne, Victoria.
Marion's wedding was reported thus by the Edinburgh Evening Courant of 14 June 1862:
