William died during the Civil War. He signed up on March 4, 1862 as a private in Co. A (McMullan Guards) of the 9th Georgia Volunteer Regiment before March 1863, when it became consolidated into the 37th Regiment of Georgia Infantry as Co. D. It was part of the Army of Tennessee and participated in the Battle of Murfreesboro on July 13, 1862 near Nashville, Tennessee. William died the next day, so it is quite easy to make the assumption that he died in that area, probably from wounds suffered in the battle.
