William Newton Burke was born in Cocke County, Tennessee. Within a few years of the war ending he, along with his wife Eliza, built a raft and floated down the Mississippi river to Arkansas Post AR. After Eliza died he married Sarah Mantooth and eventually settled in Franklin County Arkansas where he was buried. He was approximately 19 years old when his first child was born and 52 at the last one. He was married twice and ended up with 11 children. He fought for the confederacy in the civil war joining in 1862 but only served 7 months before he was captured and ended up as a POW until 1865 when he was paroled and walked back to East Tennessee from Richmond VA.
