Wollstonecraft /ˈwʊlstən.krɑːft/ is an affluent harbourside suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 4 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of North Sydney Council.
History[]
Wollstonecraft was named after Edward Wollstonecraft, the first settler to receive a land grant of 500 acres (2.0 km2) in the area, in 1821.[2] Wollstonecraft said that he left England to escape the notoriety of his aunt Mary Wollstonecraft, the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman. His business associate was Alexander Berry, another prominent resident in the area.[3]
Edward Wollstonecraft’s business associate, Alexander Berry, was another prominent resident in the area,[4] and namesake of Berry Island, a harbour-side location in Wollstonecraft.
Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the area was part of the traditional lands of the Cammeraygal people of the Eora nation.
Today Wollstonecraft is a historically significant harbourside suburb for the richness of its architectural history, with a number of Federation-style sandstone houses dating from the late Victorian era.
Transport[]
Wollstonecraft railway station is on the North Shore Line and the Northern Line of the Sydney Trains network.
