Yoakum County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 7,322. Its county seat is Plains6. The county is named for Henderson King Yoakum, a Texas historian. Yoakum County is one of 46 prohibition or entirely dry counties in the state of Texas.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,071 km² (800 sq mi), virtually all of which is land.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 7,322 people, 2,469 households, and 2,007 families residing in the county. The population density was 4/km² (9/sq mi). There were 2,974 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (4/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 70.62% White, 1.39% Black or African American, 0.71% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 25.48% from other races, and 1.65% from two or more races. 45.93% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 2,469 households out of which 43.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.80% were married couples living together, 8.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.70% were non-families. 17.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.50% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.34.

In the county, the population was spread out with 32.10% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 26.80% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.50% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $32,672, and the median income for a family was $36,772. Males had a median income of $32,188 versus $19,913 for females. The per capita income for the county was $14,504. About 17.60% of families and 19.60% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.00% of those under age 18 and 13.00% of those age 65 or over.
